Shelter Description

Shelter Chic: A Foster-Based Rescue Group Run by Volunteers Shelter Chic is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit animal rescue organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming shelter dogs and cats, taking away the stigma associated with animal shelters and their residents, and promoting animal adoption in a fun, positive, and inviting way. We bring light to the fact that there are a wide variety of animals that end up in shelters – including puppies, kittens, and purebreds – through no fault of their own. Our goal is to ensure that the most commonly passed-over rescue animals (including the seniors, those with special needs, and breeds with negative stereotypes) are given the opportunity to find loving, forever homes. While some would call these animals underdogs, our team works hard to recast these stereotypes and demonstrate they are indeed the “top dogs.”  Whether it is through dogs wearing tutus and bowties or through the edgy slogans and hip designs donned by our team, our organization strives to enliven and enrich the process of finding loving forever homes for our wonderful second-chance cuties, celebrating each animal’s individuality every step of the way. We strive to educate the public about the importance of adoption and the benefits we all gain from welcoming all, promoting love, and encouraging the spoiling of our furry friends – because after all, they’re the ones who rescue us.

Adorable April McMuffin is looking for the perfect home where she can enjoy snuggles, belly rubs and a sensible diet! April is currently around 40lbs, which is about 10-15lbs too much. April is a sweet, friendly little lady with a lot of personality. She absolutely LOVES other dogs and we would like her to go to a home where she will have other dogs to cuddle and play with. April was originally adopted as a young dog, but after her Mommy had a human baby, she no longer received the medical or physical attention she deserved. So April was returned to the city shelter she was originally adopted from, where they feared she was too sick to save. She was reported to be 17 years old by her mom, her weight had slowed her down considerably and caused her to struggle to move. Her blood results showed possible kidney failure. We all thought April did not have long. However, a few trips to the vet, and April started to make a miraculous recovery! A terrible bladder infection, that she must have been struggling with for some time, was cured with antibiotics, her blood work then showed she had no serious illnesses. Our vet believes she is much younger than reported, somewhere between 8-12 years old. She still limps a little, as she is carrying around so much extra weight and probably has some arthritis, but some easy to give pain pills are allowing her to enjoy her time in the garden playing with her foster brothers and sisters. She enjoys going on walks, and is very happy munching on her reduced calorie food. If you think you can give April all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. Dakota is being rehomed by her family. Please complete an application and families that are approved will be contacted. Please do not email with general inquiries. Dakota is an 11 year old Puggle. She weighs approximately 28 pounds and has light brown fur, which is graying around her muzzle. More importantly, she has been our faithful and loving companion for over a decade. Before my husband and I had three children, Dakota was our only focus– she loved running on the beach, playing catch in the backyard, snuggling in bed while watching movies, and receiving the occasional treat from the table. She is a small dog with a big dog personality and swagger. While age has taken its natural toll on her -- she sometimes misses the doorbell ring and often hits the snooze button in the morning – she is as athletic and active as she was when she was a puppy. He favorite thing to do is run on the beach and she, to this day, won’t stop until you tell her to. Dakota has a loving disposition and spends every second of her day making those around her happy. With 3 children under 3, Dakota has become unhappy with six hands grabbing at her all the time. It’s not the life she deserves and our ability to give Dakota the attention she should have is no longer possible. We are hoping she finds a family that possesses the flexibility that we once had, and the capacity to love Dakota that we will carry in our hearts forever. If you think you can give Dakota all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. Dillinger. 9 years old. 60lbs.  The story of Dillinger: Dillinger was given to a relative when his owner became too sick to care for him. Although Dillinger had been to the vet sporadically over his lifetime, and was a very loved member of the family, he had not been receiving the special care he needed. Realizing they could not give Dillinger the help he needed, his family posted him on Craig’s List. Although they had the best intentions, pets who are given away can end up being abused or used in illegal activities. After being alerted to this possibility, Dillinger’s family agreed to surrender him into our care. Saving Dillinger: Dillinger’s skin was so inflamed and sore, his fur was falling out, his eyes starting to swell shut, his ears so blocked he was almost deaf, along with constant itching all over his body, we were worried that he may have an incurable immune disorder. We were delighted to learn that he only has food allergies! Now that he is eating a limited ingredient allergy food and receiving extra help from medicated baths and regular ear cleanings, his recovery has been remarkable. Luckily Dillinger should not require a lifetime of special treatment or medication, he just needs to eat a healthy diet. Dillinger in foster: His foster mom says, “Dillinger is such a love. His favorite thing to do is crawl into laps and snuggle. He gives hugs if you’re in a chair! Despite his current state (and he is feeling better each day!), he has a big, curious, silly personality. He’s one of those dogs that makes you laugh every day. If he can’t be with you, he is learning to love his crate and take a nap. He has been wonderful with every dog he has met, of all ages and sizes. Every person that comes to the door is greeted with a wagging tail.” Dillinger would make a perfect addition to any family.” If you think you can give Dillinger all the love he deserves and would like to meet him, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. Meet Harley is an adorable tiny gentleman, born on April 29th, with his brother Mikey. They are both the sweetest little things, dog friendly, and very bonded.  They love getting to know people and other cats and dogs, love to eat...and love to yell at you when it's time to eat! The brothers LOVE to play and are very high energy. Both boys are healthy and ready to go to their forever home. Preference will be given to adopters interested in adopting them both. They would ideally go to a new home together, but if separated, they must each go to a home with another playful cat. Meet handsome Harry, at around 9 years old and a little under 60lbs, this senior prince is looking for the perfect retirement home. Found as a stray and clearly used to living outdoors, Harry is looking for a family that just wants to hang out and share their couch blanket, extra treats preferred but not essential. Harry is fine with other cats and dogs but is also more than happy to be an only child. He loves spending time outside, so a yard for sunbathing would be lovely, but he would also be ok with someone who was home a lot to give him frequent strolls. Harry is happy to meet new people and fine with children, although he is slowing down and might get overwhelmed by a home with a lot of activity or young children. Harry is seeking the calm, quiet life. If you think you can give Harry all the love he deserves and would like to meet him, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. Meet Lucy, she is around 6 years old and 30lbs. Lucy is a sweet girl looking for an active family who has time to continue her training and provide her with all the exercise she needs. Lucy loves to run and would do well in a home with a yard for her to frolic in or someone who enjoys long walks, frequently goes hiking and on daily runs. She also enjoys swimming. She loves to play with toys, enjoys chewing on large branches and sunbathing. Lucy would thrive in a home with experienced dog owners who have no other dogs, or only very submissive dogs. Lucy is an anxious young lady, and occasionally that leads her to make some bad decisions. However, Lucy is happy when she is on a good schedule, with a family who understands the importance of doggie rules. Lucy doesn’t want to deal with the pressures of being leader of the pack, it makes her nervous, but if she has to take over, she will! Lucy is house trained, has an incredible amount of love to give, and always has time for a cuddle. Lucy has more energy than the typical 6 year old pooch, and will need physical and mental exercise to keep her happy. Lucy currently takes medication to help with her anxiety. By consulting with your vet or taking her to see an animal behaviorist, you may be able to find other ways to help her control her anxious side. Lucy also has IBD (Irritable Bowel Disorder) which means she can only eat prescription dog food, and although she cannot have table scraps, she is a big fan of carrots and lettuce! Lucy’s anxiety means she can be easily startled, especially when sleeping. Lucy was recently surprised by her baby brother which resulted in her snapping at him. Although the bite was superficial, we advise that Lucy not be around young children or children who can not be responsible around this little lady. If you think you can give Lucy all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. https://petstablished.com/pets/public/341335 ***This is a courtesy listing. Super fluffy Masala, at 5 years old and around 13lbs, is the perfect cat for anyone who wants to spend their free time giving chin scratches. Masala would like to have ALL of your attention, but if you cannot stay home and rub his belly all day, another cat for him to cuddle with will do nicely. Masala was taken from a cat hoarder where he lived with around 25 other cats. Because of this, Masala did not receive the socialization or medical treatment he required. This has left Masala with some nervousness around strangers and why he would probably do best in a home without any young children who might try to grab his fluffy tail. However, if you provide Masala with a safe hiding spot and give him a few days to adjust, he will quickly become your absolute bestest friend. When Masala first came to us, he was very skinny and pulled chunks of his fur out from nervously over grooming himself, but with some love and attention and a good diet, his hair is growing back and he’s putting on weight. Masala also had ear mites, an eye infection, a nasty cold and was covered in dirt and matted hair, but he has made a wonderful recovery back to good health. His years of neglect have left with some dirty teeth and less than perfect kidneys.  He has some precursors to kidney disease meaning he may be at risk of developing it in the future, but currently he does not require any special attention. We have decided to supplement his regular food with some prescription food to give his kidneys a boost, but it will be up to you and your vet if you decide to continue with this.  If you think you can give Masala all the love he deserves and would like to meet him, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. Micky and Rascal are a bonded pair that MUST be adopted together. Their foster dad says: “A good friend recently passed away and I volunteered to shelter his two Siamese cats, Micky (f) and Rascal (m). They are nine years old, brother and sister and were raised along side a dog.  They’ve gone to the vet annually and both recently underwent expensive, but necessary dental surgery.  They are extremely friendly and extremely smart. They have no idea what fear is, as is apparent when I vacuum or a thunderstorm rolls in and they’re as cool as cucumbers. Micky actually knows how to play fetch. Rascal cares less about fetch, and more about pets.  There is nothing wrong with these two. It’s only I’m dealing with allergies and I’m not around to give them the attention they deserve.” If you think you can give Micky and Rascal all the love they deserves and would like to meet them, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. **Shelter Chic only adopts in the NY and NJ area. Shy girl Reina is a spayed, 2 year old Lilac-Point lady weighting approximately 10 pounds. She was surrendered to the city shelter by her owner when she decided to start traveling. Reina was surrendered along with her house mates, a dog and another cat. Reina had been living in that home since she was 8 weeks old, so she is understandably confused and a little uncertain. Luckily her new foster family is taking wonderful care of her and she is starting to come out of her shell showing what a sweet, happy girl she really is. She loves cuddling with her foster mom and enjoys sleeping right by her side. Reina is a mellow girl with gorgeous blue eyes who enjoys affection and would do well in any home! Her foster mom says: “Reina may seem timid at first but if you but once she has dubbed you as one of her people, she will shower you in affection. She loves to nuzzle and cuddle and curl up next to her person. She’s not looking for a playmate so it’s probably best if she’s the only cat in your home. Or maybe a mellow cat who’s happy to chill and give her her space.” Please note that her former owner reported that Reina does scratch at furniture even when provided a scratch post and she hates having her nails cut. Despite the fact that Reina used to live with other animals she does not seem at ease with the cat she is being fostered with, despite him being very sweet and friendly, because of this we recommend Reina goes to a home without other pets. Stella. 10 months old. 55lbs. Black Mouth Cur Mix The story of Stella: Stella came to us when we got an urgent plea from a good Samaritan to take a dog belonging to an estranged relative. This poor pup was being kept in a back room, chained to an old broken mattress, with no food or water for an unknown period of time. Being a large, energetic puppy, she was often difficult to handle, but rather than trying to train her, Stella had been beaten when she made mistakes. She was one of the saddest and most depressing examples of neglect we had ever seen.  Saving Stella: The most urgent issue for Stella was giving her the nutrition her body desperately needed. Although it would be tempting to give a starving dog as much food as they can eat, it was important to strictly regulated and measured her food to avoid further health complications.  Sadly, when Stella started to feel stronger and more energetic, it was clear that she had suffered more than we knew. By locking her away, her family had robbed her of many crucial life experiences and exposure milestones that every dog needs to become a confident and happy adult. Although she was safe, Stella was still a tiny, confused and scared puppy in a big powerful body. Stella did not understand that she was not meant to walk across the dinner table, she did not believe that no one was going to use her leash to beat her, she could not trust that it was ok to move away from situations that overwhelmed her. Realizing that Stella needed expert help, we were lucky enough to get her a temporary place in a boarding and training facility where Stella has made amazing progress. She is learning how to enjoy being outside, walk on a leash, be around other dogs, basic commands and impulse control. We are now searching for the perfect foster home for Stella to learn how to live in a home. Stella in training: Stella’s trainer says, “While we still see the occasional unwanted behavior, it's more playful and quickly squashed. She is doing well - really has the cue down for fetch and tug, and knows ‘Mine’ for not grabbing toys when I pick them up.  She wears a head collar pretty well, though still with the occasional tantrum. Doing great with dog play, and chooses avoidance when she can, which is a great trait to have.” Stella’s Canine Care Team say, “Stella is having a great time at camp! She is always curious about new smells and enjoys the company of her human friends. She loves to run when she's in the big yard and enjoy the tranquil sounds at times. Stella is such a beauty and we love having her here at camp. She's got personality and energy for miles and thats one of our favorite things about her. Stella has so much personality; she is silly, full of so much excitement and energy. She also can be super sweet and whenever she sees you coming toward her, her butt just wont stop wiggling!  If you think you can give Stella all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. Meet cute little Winifred, you can call her Winnie or Wednesday or Winnipeg. She is a tiny cat with big personality. Winnie is less than 18 months old, but she’s already had at least one litter of kittens. Formerly a feral little girl, Winnie was originally spayed with the idea that she would be released back in the area she was trapped, which is why she is rocking that clipped ear. Winnie had often been found scrounging for food and trying to start her own street gang by a friend of Shelter Chic’s. Although she was a diamond in rough, this kind Samaritan trapped her and paid for all the vet expenses out of her own pocket. When Winnie was well enough to return to her old life, our dear friend thought maybe she would give Winnie the choice to see if she would prefer a fresh start as a pampered kitty. Most feral cats have a very hard time making the transition but sweet little Winnie become a house cat almost immediately! She is a smart girl who knows a good opportunity when she sees one ; ) She now loves being inside, and being around other cats. She's is still not a big fan of being held, but she is happy to be around people...especially when they have food. She loves to grab food out of your hands (or swat it down to her level), particularly chicken, and will sleep near your head on the back of the couch when you’re watching tv. She would do best in a home with another cat as she loves curling up next to others, and needs someone who has the patience to work with her on becoming more comfortable with people.  She is also good with dogs - well certainly not intimidated by them! She has no problem getting into their face and trying to steal food when they are getting a burger or chicken as a special treat. She is very food motivated, which is very helpful to teach her to be more relaxed around people. She will always be the first to check out what everyone is eating.  Winnie is looking for an experienced cat owner or someone who has other cats and is not looking for a snuggle buddy. Although friendly and keen to be around you, she does not want to cuddle and if that works for you, she will be a great addition to your family, plus she is super stinking cute. :)  If you think you can give Winnie all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt.
