Shelter Description

Shelter Chic: A Foster-Based Rescue Group Run by Volunteers Shelter Chic is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit animal rescue organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming shelter dogs and cats, taking away the stigma associated with animal shelters and their residents, and promoting animal adoption in a fun, positive, and inviting way. We bring light to the fact that there are a wide variety of animals that end up in shelters – including puppies, kittens, and purebreds – through no fault of their own. Our goal is to ensure that the most commonly passed-over rescue animals (including the seniors, those with special needs, and breeds with negative stereotypes) are given the opportunity to find loving, forever homes. While some would call these animals underdogs, our team works hard to recast these stereotypes and demonstrate they are indeed the “top dogs.”  Whether it is through dogs wearing tutus and bowties or through the edgy slogans and hip designs donned by our team, our organization strives to enliven and enrich the process of finding loving forever homes for our wonderful second-chance cuties, celebrating each animal’s individuality every step of the way. We strive to educate the public about the importance of adoption and the benefits we all gain from welcoming all, promoting love, and encouraging the spoiling of our furry friends – because after all, they’re the ones who rescue us.

Super sweet senior Gertie is looking for a forever home where she can enjoy galloping, cuddles and extra treats! Gertie is around 9-13 years old, she is a medium sized dog who somehow weighs around 50lbs, although she certainly does NOT look like it. To know Gertie is to love her and she adores getting extra attention. She does well in the car, is very good at the vet, well behaved on walks and always willing to try on a new outfit. She is happy with people of all ages and would make the perfect addition to any family who would be willing to give her all the love and devotion she deserves. She has lived with several dogs of different sizes during her time in foster care and is currently living with a dog-savvy cat. Gertie would be happiest in a home where she was the only pet and center of attention, but she would do well in almost any home. After all, furry brothers and sisters might be convinced to give her their treats too! Gertie is known by friends as a “fake senior” since she shows no signs of slowing down despite her age, she loves long walks, rolling in the grass and going with you to run errands. Gertie gets along well with dogs of all sizes but she does like to bark at small and fluffy critters, so we do recommend caution to begin with if you have cats. We do not recommend her living with rabbits. Gertie was surrender to the city shelter by someone who said they found her roaming the streets, however she was so well fed, clean, friendly, well trained and clearly used to living indoors, it’s seems unlikely she was living as a stray. Instead we believe that because Gertie had a large growth that would require an expensive surgery to remove, her owners decided to dump her at the kill shelter so they would not have to deal with it. After having the lump removed, we performed other tests on Gertie that unfortunately showed that she still has microscopic remnants of slow growth, stage 2 cancer. At this time our vets recommended no further treatment for Gertie as she currently shows no signs of the illness or of any growths. Although we cannot say that Gertie is officially cancer free, we can say that she needs no special treatment other than checking her for lumps as you would any senior dog. Gertie currently takes pain medication for arthritis and medication for a heart murmur.  If you think you can give Gertie all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. Meet Harley is an adorable tiny gentleman, born on April 29th 2018, with his brother Mikey. They are both the sweetest little things, dog friendly, and very bonded.  They love getting to know people and other cats and dogs, love to eat...and love to yell at you when it's time to eat! The brothers LOVE to play and are very high energy. Both boys are healthy and ready to go to their forever home. Preference will be given to adopters interested in adopting them both. They would ideally go to a new home together, but if separated, they must each go to a home with another playful cat. If you think you can give Harley all the love he deserves and would like to meet him, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. Stella can ONLY be adopted in the NY/NJ area. Aprox. 1 year old. 55lbs. Black Mouth Cur Mix The story of Stella: Stella came to us when we got an urgent plea from a good Samaritan to take a dog belonging to an estranged relative. This poor pup was being kept in a back room, chained to an old broken mattress, with no food or water for an unknown period of time. Being a large, energetic puppy, she was often difficult to handle, but rather than trying to train her, Stella had been beaten when she made mistakes. She was one of the saddest and most depressing examples of neglect we had ever seen.  Saving Stella: The most urgent issue for Stella was giving her the nutrition her body desperately needed. Although it would be tempting to give a starving dog as much food as they can eat, it was important to strictly regulated and measured her food to avoid further health complications.  Sadly, when Stella started to feel stronger and more energetic, it was clear that she had suffered more than we knew. By locking her away, her family had robbed her of many crucial life experiences and exposure milestones that every dog needs to become a confident and happy adult. Although she was safe, Stella was still a tiny, confused and scared puppy in a big powerful body. Stella did not understand that she was not meant to walk across the dinner table, she did not believe that no one was going to use her leash to beat her, she could not trust that it was ok to move away from situations that overwhelmed her. Realizing that Stella needed expert help, we were lucky enough to get her a temporary place in a boarding and training facility where Stella has made amazing progress. She is learning how to enjoy being outside, walk on a leash, be around other dogs, basic commands and impulse control. We are now searching for the perfect foster home for Stella to learn how to live in a home. Stella in training: Stella’s trainer says, “While we still see the occasional unwanted behavior, it's more playful and quickly squashed. She is doing well - really has the cue down for fetch and tug, and knows ‘Mine’ for not grabbing toys when I pick them up.  She wears a head collar pretty well, though still with the occasional tantrum. Doing great with dog play, and chooses avoidance when she can, which is a great trait to have.” Stella’s Canine Care Team say, “Stella is having a great time at camp! She is always curious about new smells and enjoys the company of her human friends. She loves to run when she's in the big yard and enjoy the tranquil sounds at times. Stella is such a beauty and we love having her here at camp. She's got personality and energy for miles and thats one of our favorite things about her. Stella has so much personality; she is silly, full of so much excitement and energy. She also can be super sweet and whenever she sees you coming toward her, her butt just wont stop wiggling!  See Stella on The Dodo at: https://www.facebook.com/thedodosite/videos/1376367309191892/ If you think you can give Stella all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt.
