About Snookie

Sweet and cuddly Snookie is 10 year old, about 68lbs, and looking for her forever home!! We pulled this overweight little girl from the Associated Humane Society of Newark where she had been surrendered by her previous owner due to "landlord issues". Seeing her in the kennel at our shelter broke out hearts. She was facing the wall, shaking, and would not respond when being called. As soon as we took her out, she started crying, looking around. As we spent more time with her, we saw how unbelievably gentle and loving she was. When we went to put her back in her kennel she started crying again and we had to carry her in. We decided then and there we absolutely could not leave this girl behind- and she KNEW IT!! As soon as we took her out again and signed her paperwork, she gave us our very first kiss, thanking us. She is now in foster and is described as a perfect angel. She is house-trained, extremely low maintenance, and just wants love. She won’t prefer to be an only child and it looking for a home with no other dogs.

You cannot get much better than this Ace in the pack. Ace is around 8-10 years old, and 55lbs. Although he does the most amazing Elvis impression with his lip, his foster mom has endearingly nicknamed him Grandpa. Super social and happy when he’s out and about, but more than happy to spend the day napping in his favorite armchair once he gets back home. Ace is a DREAMBOAT who we pulled from the NYC city shelter. A volunteer writes: I finally got my chance to meet Ace, a handsome and elegant gentleman, all dressed in black. I do not know if he reminds me of a knight or his ebony steed. He knew why I was at his door and in no time, we found ourselves in the street. Ace seems very housetrained. He is a steady walker, a good sitter at the lights, respectful of birds and other dogs met. I know that in our playgroups, he is polite with his peers, males and females. He enjoys his time, leash free in the yard where he poses like a star for pictures. Indeed, Ace seems naturally all dressed up for a fancy gathering and can not take a bad shot! Ace is quite dreamy here at the care center. He is polite, compliant, wags his tail, always but his thoughts are somewhere else. I am sure you know where. A home sweet home, the love of a family, that is what his heart is after. Although Ace shows no signs of a current injury, he is particularly sensitive to having his back legs touched. We believe this is due to some kind of physical or emotional trauma he experienced in the past. Because of this, Ace does not like to be examined or touched in that area by someone who he considers to be a stranger. However, once Ace comes to fully trust you, his anxiety about this disappears. Ace is looking for a dog savvy owner, who has the knowledge, patience and understanding to help him overcome his past and make his time with strangers and at the vet less worrisome for him. This can be achieved with positive training methods using high value treats and repetition. Ace cannot be placed in a home with children or other pets. Sweet, senior Butter Pecan is a gentleman who is deserving of so much love. At around 10 years old and a skinny 4lbs, Butter is an absolute sweetheart with a lot of love to give. He loves to cuddle and snuggle, loving nothing more than long head scratch. Butter came to us after he had spent years living in a cat colony and being fed by someone who thought they were helping. Sadly, Butter did not receive the medical attention he desperately needed and it had made him grumpy and despondent. But, even in pain, he was a favorite of the shelter staff, always coming to the front of his cage for extra love and scritches. Now that Butter is getting all the attention he needs in his foster home, he is a much happier and out going guy. Although he only has one eye, it does not slow him down or hinder his coordination. Butter Pecan is making up for years of being under fed, and although he has no teeth left, he has no problem gobbling down wet food. He is currently being fostered with a small friendly dog and they love to cuddle. He has also previously lived with multiple cats. Butter Pecan is an easy to care for cat looking for someone with a can opener and time to snuggle in the evenings. See more pictures and learn more about Butter Pecan’s story on our instagram pages @shelterchic and @shelterchicanimals. Adorable, senior girl Chatrlotte, is around 12 years old and about 40lbs. Charlotte is a loving, happy-go-lucky lady who adores all people, gets on well with dogs and is even happy living with cats! She still loves to gallop around with her doggie pals, she might even bring you back the ball if you’re lucky, but she is always available to snuggle in a blanket and take a nap on the couch. Sweet Charlotte was originally adopted from Newark Associated Humane Societies in 2009 when she was a still practically a puppy at 3 years old. After 9 years of love and devotion, poor Charlotte ended up back at city pound when her family decided they could not care for her when she needed her most. Charlotte was the happiest dog when she walked back through those doors, just happy to go for a walk with her family. She did not realize that they would be going home without her. All the staff at the shelter were heartbroken to watch her wait by the door for their return, and they reached out to other rescues to get her back in a home as soon as possible. Charlotte is having a wonderful time in her new foster home, and she is wagging her tail once again. Her foster mom says "Charlotte is a wonderful, sweet old lady who acts years younger than she is. She has an adorable personality and a lot of spunk in her step. She loves all people and other animals (she wants to play with every single dog she meets). She does well with dogs and cats. We have not seen her interact with small children, but she ignores them when walking on the street. She is a snuggle bug who loves company and would love to be in a home where her people and/or other animals are home regularly to snuggle and play with her. She does well on car rides and is good on leash. She is the perfect pup and needs her perfect forever home to live the rest of her life in.” Charlotte has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease but is responding extremely well to a prescription diet (just Hill's Science Diet k/d formula). She is fully housetrained, but does need the opportunity to relieve herself a bit more than many adult dogs (typically every 5-6 hours, though she does usually make it through the full night) due to her kidney disease. She will let you know when she needs to go to the bathroom if you pay attention to her cues. She also has a few lumps and bumps but they have all been tested and are nothing to worry about. This is no Diamond in the rough, she is everyone’s perfect pup! At around 11 years old (although she acts much younger) and about 55lbs, Diamond is a lively senior lady with a lot of love to give. She bonds quickly to people and we think was a former jogging buddy. Although she has slowed down a little now, she still has enough energy to play a game of fetch or go for a hike. She has a speckled belly, which she loves to have rubbed. Diamond is a true family dog - calm, gentle, and easy going. She has no guarding issues, walks well on a leash and is fine being left home alone to snooze on the couch. She has limited hearing, but that does not cause her any problems. She is very treat motivated, and is eager to learn new tricks. Diamond is a sweet lady who adores all people, and is tolerant of most dogs, although as a senior lady she would rather be an only pet or live with a similarly chill senior. She no longer has the energy or patiences for young pups and will occasionally bark at other dogs to tell them to relax. However, if they stay away from her, she has zero interest in them. Diamond was surrendered to the city shelter after her owners moved and decided not to take her with them. She waited at the shelter for six MONTHS, constantly being over looked, despite being very popular at adoption events. Her age may have been a factor, as her owners reported she was approximately 11 years old. However, her energy level and the condition of her teeth suggest she is younger than that. Possibly closer to 7 or 8 years old. They also reported she had hearing issues, which we have seen no signs of. See more pictures and learn more about Diamond’s story on our instagram pages @shelterchic and @shelterchicanimals. Adorable Didi is a sweet lady who is looking for a special home to take care of her. At around 2 years old and about 40lbs, Didi is an absolute sweetheart with a lot of love to give. Didi was surrendered to the kill shelter when her family realized she had a leg injury that was causing her so much pain, she had stopped eating. Didi was quickly placed on the euthanasia list, as her requirement for an expensive surgery would make it almost impossible to get her adopted. Thankfully, we were able to find a foster home willing to help us get her through her surgery, recovery and rehabilitation. Didi requires a hip replacement, which is not offered by many vets. We are thankful that the AMC has agreed to perform this operation for us. **Didi has not yet had the surgery she requires. If she is adopted before that happens, we will still move forward with operation we have arranged at our cost. Didi is currently being fostered with dogs and cats and gets along famously with everyone. She is also great with people of all ages. Meet Harley is an adorable tiny gentleman, born on April 29th, with his brother Mikey. They are both the sweetest little things, dog friendly, and very bonded. They love getting to know people and other cats and dogs, love to eat...and love to yell at you when it's time to eat! The brothers LOVE to play and are very high energy. Both boys are healthy and ready to go to their forever home. Preference will be given to adopters interested in adopting them both. They would ideally go to a new home together, but if separated, they must each go to a home with another playful cat. Little monkey Izzi, might be 11 years old but she certainly has no idea. At around 9lbs, this hypoallergenic fluff ball is looking for the perfect family to keep up with her. Izzi’s hobbies include long walks everyday, weekend hikes, and traveling. She is perfectly happy in the car, great on a plane, just about anywhere you go, she would love to come along. She loves adventures and she does well in new environments, but she’s also fine if you need to leave her home alone for a few hours. She is still a very active and agile dog, who loves to climb and is happy to go on a long, or steep hike. Despite her age, she will need someone who has the time and energy to give her the exercise she needs. She is absolutely not a couch potato! Although she is active, she will also need to spend plenty of time cuddling. She’s an entertainer and she loves attention because she loves to amuse people. If you’re interested in teaching some new tricks, Izzi is ready to learn. Izzi is not the greatest fan of every dog she meets, but she does have doggie friends and does best with puppies and very subdued, laidback dogs. After receiving a bite from another dog many years ago, Izzi does not like to eat food or treats around other animals. She loves to chases squirrels and is the stuff of nightmares to mice everywhere. She is ok with cats but she has been known to chase them too. Unless she can be with a confident, low energy cat or dog, Izzi would do best in a home where she is the only pet. She’s is currently in very good health and likes exercise. She previously had her ACL and the knee on one back leg repaired. Her patella is still loose on the other back leg, but it does not bother her or slow her down. She has occasional back spasms which are believed to be the result of general wear and tear, and do not overly concern her vet. She has been tested for neurological issues and has no problems. Her vet will attest that she is a wonderful patient, and very tolerant of examinations and tests. Izzi is being surrendered because her family grew by one little human baby, and the transition has been very hard on her. She has started to develop anxiety about the amount of noise her new sister makes and strongly dislikes no longer being an only child. While Izzi was previously tolerant of children, her new situation has made her develop some resentment toward them all. Although her parents have tried working with a trainer, medication, homeopathic chews, pheromone collars and diffusers, nothing is getting Izzi back to her old self, so instead we are trying to find Izzi the perfect retirement home. If you love to go on adventures, travel, hike and have a home that has no children, no pets and time for cuddles every evening, Izzi is the perfect dog for you. She definitely wants to be someone’s princess and preference will be given to those who met the above criteria. If you think you can give Izzi all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. Meet Lucy, she is around 6 years old and 30lbs. Lucy is a sweet girl looking for an active family who has time to continue her training and provide her with all the exercise she needs. Lucy loves to run and would do well in a home with a yard for her to frolic in or someone who enjoys long walks, frequently goes hiking and on daily runs. She also enjoys swimming. She loves to play with toys, enjoys chewing on large branches and sunbathing. Lucy would thrive in a home with experienced dog owners who have no other dogs, or only very submissive dogs. Lucy is an anxious young lady, and occasionally that leads her to make some bad decisions. However, Lucy is happy when she is on a good schedule, with a family who understands the importance of doggie rules. Lucy doesn’t want to deal with the pressures of being leader of the pack, it makes her nervous, but if she has to take over, she will! Lucy is house trained, has an incredible amount of love to give, and always has time for a cuddle. Lucy has more energy than the typical 6 year old pooch, and will need physical and mental exercise to keep her happy. Lucy currently takes medication to help with her anxiety. By consulting with your vet or taking her to see an animal behaviorist, you may be able to find other ways to help her control her anxious side. Lucy also has IBD (Irritable Bowel Disorder) which means she can only eat prescription dog food, and although she cannot have table scraps, she is a big fan of carrots and lettuce! Lucy’s anxiety means she can be easily startled, especially when sleeping. Lucy was recently surprised by her baby brother which resulted in her snapping at him. Although the bite was superficial, we advise that Lucy not be around young children or children who can not be responsible around this little lady. If you think you can give Lucy all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt. https://petstablished.com/pets/public/341335 ***This is a courtesy listing. At around 1 year old, Raven is an adorable, cuddle baby with tons of energy. She's a goofy character with beautiful markings. She loves playing with her fish on a string, and has learned how to toss around tinfoil recently. After tiring herself out, Raven loves to sleep on your belly, chest, or wrapped around your head. She was rescued from the streets and can take a little time to get used to new people but isn't shy and responds wonderfully to affection (and lots of attention). Raven is a very high energy, frisky, active cat and will get herself into mischief if you can't provide her with lots of fun things to do. Raven has a mild case of stomatitis, which means her dental health is important. However, like all pets, a balanced diet of quality food and regular teeth brushing, is keeping her mouth in great shape. Adorable Tony is a sweet guy who has had a rough time over the past few months. At around 4 years old and a 63lbs, Tony deserves to find a new forever home that is full of love. Tony developed a painful hernia, and along with complications from not being neutered, Tony had an almost permanent upset stomach. Along side that discomfort, Tony also has a leg injury that requires ACL surgery. Poor Tony sat in the kill shelter for months waiting for someone to take pity on him. Thankfully, we were able to find an amazing foster home to help Tony through these two surgeries and recuperate surrounded by love. Although Tony has not yet had the leg surgery he requires, we are currently fund raising for it and we will be paying for the surgery even if he is adopted before we repair it. Meet cute little Winifred, you can call her Winnie or Wednesday or Winnipeg. She is a tiny cat with big personality. Winnie is less than 18 months old, but she’s already had at least one litter of kittens. Formerly a feral little girl, Winnie was originally spayed with the idea that she would be released back in the area she was trapped, which is why she is rocking that clipped ear. Winnie had often been found scrounging for food and trying to start her own street gang by a friend of Shelter Chic’s. Although she was a diamond in rough, this kind Samaritan trapped her and paid for all the vet expenses out of her own pocket. When Winnie was well enough to return to her old life, our dear friend thought maybe she would give Winnie the choice to see if she would prefer a fresh start as a pampered kitty. Most feral cats have a very hard time making the transition but sweet little Winnie become a house cat almost immediately! She is a smart girl who knows a good opportunity when she sees one ; ) She now loves being inside, and being around other cats. She's is still not a big fan of being held, but she is happy to be around people...especially when they have food. She loves to grab food out of your hands (or swat it down to her level), particularly chicken, and will sleep near your head on the back of the couch when you’re watching tv. She would do best in a home with another cat as she loves curling up next to others, and needs someone who has the patience to work with her on becoming more comfortable with people. She is also good with dogs - well certainly not intimidated by them! She has no problem getting into their face and trying to steal food when they are getting a burger or chicken as a special treat. She is very food motivated, which is very helpful to teach her to be more relaxed around people. She will always be the first to check out what everyone is eating. Winnie is looking for an experienced cat owner or someone who has other cats and is not looking for a snuggle buddy. Although friendly and keen to be around you, she does not want to cuddle and if that works for you, she will be a great addition to your family, plus she is super stinking cute. :) If you think you can give Winnie all the love she deserves and would like to meet her, please go to Petstablished.com or follow the link below to complete an application to adopt.
