PLEASE READ FULL BIO BEFORE APPLYING TO ADOPT. There will be NO exceptions to what Teddy needs in his forever home. Meet handsome 1 yr old Teddy. He is a 3/4 Havanese 1/4 Shih Tzu mix who was an owner surrender to us. Teddy was purchased as a pup, but early on his family noticed some behavioral issues with him. Being their first dog they did the right thing by him and sough medical advice and training advice. Medical issues were ruled out and a behaviorst began working with the family. Teddy has made a lot of progress but he still needs a very confident, dog savvy forever home. Absolutely NO children full time in the home under the age of 13. See Teddy likes kids, in fact he is in foster with kids who are very dog savvy, but Teddy has what we call melt downs which can make it a little unsafe for kids when he gets in his mood. Teddy generally gives very very clear signals that he needs space when hes in the middle of a melt down, but young children just don't understand. Teddy LOVES other dogs, he is a bit intimidated by dogs larger than him but can warm up. But a playmate his size is very much needed in his forever home. He looks to the other dogs for guidence on how to behave and what is appropriate. Teddy seems to have a pain stimuli response. The only time we've seen his meltdowns is when he's hurt himself and he panics. For example while rough housing with another foster dog in the home, he was mildly hurt and his response was to run away crying to her person, BUT once his person attempted to help he responded by trying to bite (did not connect). He then hid himself away under the dining room table growling any time his person walked by. He was immediately ignored and it took about 3 hours for him to finally "move on" from the incident and by the next morning he was back to his normal self. He will bully his people into things by trying to be "tough" and he needs to be told to knock it off which in turn makes him actually feel more secure, once he knows you WILL NOT put up with him trying to call all the shots, he minds very well. He has had about 3 melt downs in the nearly 6 weeks he's been in foster. The first was the worst and then the other two he was much quicker to "forgive" and "forget" whatever it was that startled him and move on from the incident. Teddy HATES his crate. His previous family said it was his safe place, but we have not found that to be accurate at all. In fact we've seen his "aggressive" side amp up in the crate- lunging - barking- growling. This is not an issue in his current foster and he's not crated and a very good boy when out. He hasn't had accidents in his current foster with regular potty breaks. He came to us on 2 presciption meds from his previous home who said initially they saw improvement with prozac and trazadone, but after sometime on it no improvement noted. We have weened him off these completely since they did not curb his behavior. Teddy is NON shedding, soft and needs regular grooming. Last time his family took him for grooming the groomer said he would need sedated to returned. We do think Teddy could get through grooming with a muzzle though. His foster is working on muzzle training now-putting muzzle on briefly, taking off, giving a treat and disengaging so he learns the muzzle is a good thing! But this will need time and continued work so that his next appt is positive. He is young, still able to learn new behavior and now that he's been stable in our care we know he can find a new forever home as long as someone isn't scared of his intimidation at first and able to give him the structure he needs. Teddy needs: Someone who is home more often than not Another dog in the home his size who will be playful with him- he loves to play No crates, maybe a big x pen if containment is absolutely necessary no kids under 13 continued behavior modification and ability to learn his cues and being able to disengage during a meltdown someone who wants a semi active pup, he loves car rides, walks, being outdoors He is, vaccinated, and adoption includes being microchipped, current on flea/tick prevention meds and has been dewormed. They come with a collar, 2 free vet exams, a bag of grain free dog food, and a private training session with certified trainer, and more! adoption fee: $275. We accept Cash and Debit/Credit Cards.
